General

  • It’s just how my brain works! Think of it as translation but instead of just words and an alphabet I have a visual vocabulary to tap into. It does also help to be able to improvise creatively (thanks, youth theatre years).

  • Usually I’m booked up at least a month ahead but do get in touch as there might be availability for your project or event. Booking ahead is a good idea.

  • Good question! If you like the style I draw in then we are off to a good start – if your commission or event is the type I can do that’s even better. Have a look at my projects and social media for the range of work I can do. You can send me details of what you are after and I can have a look at how I can help.

  • My job is to translate whatever content you have into something that’s understandable by people who aren't experts. During a live event, presentation skills matter as the clearer a person presents what’s important, the better I can make sure it gets captured. You can always send me any technical terms in advance and I research visual reference material and ask questions when needed.

  • I have previously said no to tobacco and gambling companies and I wouldn’t work with anyone who advocates hostility or injustice towards any minority group. Environmental and social justice and inclusivity are important principles for me.

  • That’s great to hear! Fill in my contact form or email me with more details of what you have in mind and we can see how we can work together.

Graphic recording

  • Usually I’m booked at least a month in advance but do get in touch to see if the date happens to be free. If not, I can also help create illustrations from the event outputs after the date.

  • Use my contact form or send me an email with the event date and any other details like duration, budget, location and roughly what happens during the day. If I’m free and my price sounds good then I will send you an estimate with all the details to book the work in. We can arrange a short call nearer the date to iron out the details.

  • Event date, venue, budget range, timings, agenda and activities, availability of wall space, how you will use the images after the event. Any preferred title for visual, logos, hashtags, web addresses.

  • My live in person graphic recording packages start from £850 per day (I don’t charge VAT). Costs would change depending on things like event duration, detailed breakout group capture, accommodation and transport expenses and extended image license.

  • A smooth wall space about 2.5 x 1.5 metres that I am allowed to attach paper to with white tac. Or, I can hire standalone boards or bring a smaller board with me depending on location. Usually one side of the room works well so please leave a bit of room clear from any seating. A chair and a small table would be nice too.

  • I take the visual home and get it scanned into a lovely high resolution file. I then send over the digital file and you can always get reprints made from them if you wish to display the illustration on your walls. Alternatively you can keep the image and photograph it.

  • I arrive to set up about an hour before event start time to make sure the paper and title are ready and I’m caffeinated before we get going. During the event you will mainly see the back of my head as I listen and draw on the paper and you can tell people to come and check the visuals during breaks. Do encourage people to take and share photos with your hashtag on social media, it always creates a great buzz! If you spot anything that needs to be added in or amended, just come and give me a nudge. We can all pose for photos next to the visual at the end!

  • Usually people make the most of social media sharing during or after the event. Graphic recording visuals make great summaries for newsletters, follow-ups and reports and can work as the basis for conversation at future events or training workshops.

  • Usually things work out ok and we can simply reschedule. I charge a small cancellation fee depending on how close to the event date it is and if I can’t rebook that date for another job.

Digital scribing

  • I attend your virtual event remotely and use an iPad Pro to draw on. I can stream the feed live into the event or simply be a silent observer and draw the visuals without interrupting the flow. Digital scribing can also be used at in person events by showing the illustration progress on TV or projector screens. I often draw as a silent observer off screen and finish the visuals quickly after the event.

  • I have mainly worked on Zoom where I can either share my iPad screen or replace my participant video with the iPad illustration screen so the video can be pinned to be viewed whenever is appropriate. I always run a tech test in advance so we can check everything works. And if the tech fails, I can always draw while listening or use a recording as a backup. And if something else fails, I can always draw the work afterwards if you record it - plan A, B, C!

  • Ddigital scribing can do wonders for keeping attention on the topic, help memorise details and spark discussion. However, I have a “hot take” on this: I don’t think showing a digital scribing feed during an event is always the best choice. A live feed can work great in supporting a brainstorming workshop or capture free flowing discussion but if you have a presenter who has slides to show or information people need to focus on then the live feed might be stressing our precious attention span by adding another source of information to process through a narrow funnel (a single computer screen). So, it’s more important to consider what your event outcomes are and I can tailor my approach to it.

  • Absolutely fine! Most of the time I draw while listening to the event and finish the visuals shortly afterwards. This process allows me to be flexible and work with your budget and the level of detail you wish to cover. This means I can create more in depth visuals, cover more sessions and draw breakout session feedback too.

  • My packages start from £450 for digital scribing 1 hour events and £700 for visual summaries with more detail.

  • Let me know the date, duration, budget, video call platform, a rough idea of an agenda, what kind of sessions you have and how you would like to use the images afterwards. I will ask you for any logos, hashtags, URLs or other supporting information that should be included and can work with your brand colours or create a custom palette for you. And please consider a backup plan in case the tech fails!

  • I can draw from recorded Zoom or Teams videos which is a great way to work if I’m not available on your event date. I still use the same process of listening and drawing and can tailor the visual summaries for you.

Illustration

  • Thanks for asking! If you look at the work on my website you can probably tell I don’t do those things. I do some editorial illustration but you are better off finding someone brilliant who specialises in the above. For events and idea illustrations, I’m definitely your person of choice.

  • I prefer to work on projects with more turnaround time and I’m usually booked up a month ahead. If you can plan a bit more ahead I am more likely to have the availability.

  • I can work in the styles you can see on my website and social media: comic-influenced and simple illustration. If you want something that looks different, for example hand drawn watercolour, you need to find an illustrator who already works in that style.

  • You will get digital files, usually both high resolution files for printing and web quality files for online and social media use. You can use the images as agreed in the image license (read more below).

  • Think of it as the value and use of the illustration work: how will you use the image and how valuable is it to you? Sharing an image in an internal newsletter is different from an illustration plastered on billboards across the country. I always make sure to ask questions and set up the license before we start work so there are no surprises. A common list of things to consider includes: Size, audience (local / national / worldwide), media (online pdf, newsletter, website, social media, training materials, posters, billboards, anything paid for like advertising), duration (6 months / 1 year / 3 years / in perpetuity), exclusivity (who gets to use the image). The Association of Illustrators has a great article explaining the ins and outs of image licensing. I usually give out a “common sense” license: you can use the images in the event or project context only, with credit and without stretching or distorting the images. This should cover the most common uses!

  • I’m afraid not: when you commission illustration work you are asking for a specific solution. It wouldn’t be fair for me to capture a one day event to find that a quick sketch has been put to use as a logo without permission – that’s a different job altogether. Same goes for commissions: If I do one spot illustration for a specific article, you cannot use it for a different article or project without permission. So it’s best practice to think at the start of briefing how widely you might need to use the image.

  • I don’t sell copyright to any of my images as I always set an image license to cover the use. Don’t worry though, in most cases my standard license will cover the use you have in mind.

Planning and strategy

  • I can be a live scribe at a workshop where you discuss new ideas, directions, values, vision or processes and make it visible to help people keep focus and spark connections. I can also draw vision or journey maps that show the big picture and how things connect so you can share top level strategy with staff and stakeholders across the board. I have worked with architects, placemakers, planners, staff away days and local and national government departments.

  • Let me know the date and other details and I can check my diary.

  • While I have experience in graphic and idea facilitation I find it best practice to work together with a facilitator. They are more practiced in managing energy and group dynamics and my visual skills can support that.

  • I’d love to! I have run short visual thinking sessions at universities and innovation camps, tailored to desired outcomes such as generating and visualising ideas or developing stories and storyboarding or even basic drawing skills. I’m passionate about promoting visual thinking as an accessible skill that doesn’t have to be about how well you can draw and I really enjoy seeing participants feel like they can have permission to find their own way of working with visual vocabulary and visual notetaking. Get in touch with some details of what you have in mind and we can chat more.
