Navigating contested pasts

Dr Alena Pfoser from Loughborough University approached me to create a set of illustrations for her research project 'Tourism as memory-making'. Working together with tour guides she developed a set of guidelines on how to talk about contested memories and wanted a cover and editorial illustrations to support the key tips.

As the guidelines might eventually be translated to different languages, my challenge was to represent the key tips so that they could apply in any cultural setting. This is why I used an abstract drawing style for the people and symbols to represent words and dialogue. I chose a colour palette based on tourism posters avoiding primary colours that are often used in flags and have strong associations with country flags.

You can read about the project in this research article.
